Taking Pictures of Beautiful Birds

The other day I was taking pictures of birds outside of my house.  It was in the middle of the evening and I told myself that I had to do what was right in order to take good pictures.  I always love to take pictures of animals and birds.  It actually brings a lot of joy into my heart.  I always feel this sense of love and belonging when I am helping animals and birds.  When I take pictures of birds, I am able to show my family and friends some beauty in nature as well.  I can honestly say that this helps me to look at life in a whole new way.  It makes me realize that life is about love and joy.  It brings peace into your heart and causes you to feel more happiness on a daily basis.

When I take pictures of birds, I realize that it is not just photography that I am getting myself into.  It is actually perfecting the art of being a professional photographer.  Many people from different walks of life have told me that I have such a wonderful way of getting through to people that want to learn more about photography and taking pictures.  I believe that it is with trial and error that you find out more about photography and photographing.

I think that the digital camera is the best camera in the world. It helps you to grow into another form of life. It can really help you to see a light at the end of the tunnel. The more that you grow closer to what you want, the more that life gets the best of you.

I started to take pictures when I was a young child.  I used to sit outside of my house and take pictures of dogs and cats.  I later got into bird photography because it was such a lovely experience.  I used to sit outside and take pictures of red and blue birds.  It was an exciting time for me to see what life was truly all about. It was a good way for me to see a new beginning in all that I was doing. I learned that you have to be peaceful and satisfied with what you are given in life.  You must always try to aim for what is right and to always aim for happiness.  I try to do this each day of my life and I often get the right moves done.

I think that taking pictures of happiness and love is a great opportunity for anyone to have in life.  It actually provides you with a sense of happiness and wholeness.  You always begin to grow into something that is very unique when you take pictures.  I always tell people to enjoy the life that you have now because you never know what tomorrow can bring.  I usually keep my photographs for years.  This is the great thing about photography.  There is always something new to learn each day.

I love to teach people more about photography on my wedding photography website each day.

Photography Tips: 5 Tips for Amateur Photographers

So you’ve just picked up your first SLR (Single Lens Reflex) camera. You’ve read the manual and surfed the web, and now you’re ready to start taking some Pulitzer- grade photography.  Right?  Sure! But before you take off with camera in hand, take a moment to read over these five tips so you can help your images go from great to fabulous.

1.  Dump the Flash

While it’s true that professional photographers often do use a flash or complicated light rigs, you shouldn’t need a flash in most lighting conditions. Subjects taken in natural light often look more natural and have more detail and depth than pictures taken with a flash. Additionally, getting rid of the flash during your first week will make you a lot more familiar with how your camera works with light- giving you an invaluable skill as a beginning photographer.

2.   Turn Off Auto Focus

There’s no arguing that a camera that auto-focuses is infinitely handy and easy to use. However, focusing on the fly is an important tool in any photographer’s toolbox. Since cameras don’t understand your intent, it’s up to you to make sure you’re focused on the right thing at the right moment. It’s amazing how interesting an image can be when you let the focus be out of the direct center of the frame, so don’t forget to set your camera to manual from time to time.

3.  Take a Photo Class

You can buy all the books in the world and browse the internet for days, but the absolute best way to learn about photography is in a hands on environment. Find a class at a community college or local art school and see how understanding photography will improve your work for the better. As a bonus, your photo teacher will likely give you assignments based on individual elements of photography that you probably never considered.

4.  Say Farewell to Color

Before you dive into color, buy a few rolls of T-Max 400 (great B&W film) and see if taking it back to the basics changes your interpretation of the world around you. You know it’s time to upgrade to taking color images when you can print a black and white image that has pure black, pure white and every tone in between. Shooting in black and white will force your mind to think less about the “photo” and more about how light interacts with objects (the important part) in a frame.

5.  Shoot, Shoot, Shoot

This may seem obvious, but if you’re interested in becoming a “great” photographer, you’ll need to shoot lots and lots of photos. The more pictures you take, the better you will get. Photography is often as much about timing and luck as it is skill and equipment. Even “great” photographers only average 3-4 good photos at a time, so don’t worry about taking a lot of images. It’s far worse to miss a photo opportunity than to take too many pictures!

There is no great secret to being an amazing photographer. The more you challenge yourself, the better you’ll become. If you start with a strong understanding of how your camera works and what it takes to take a good photo, the rest will come with practice. Your camera will never change- only your ability to manipulate it. So keep your SLR close and extra film or memory card on hand. Never be afraid of experimenting with new ideas because there will always be more film or memory cards! And remember: The most important photograph in the world is the one you are about to take.

Photography 101: All About F Stops

Taking pictures and adjusting the settings manually can be intimidating to the new photographer. Veterans of the craft will no doubt remember the first roll of film they ruined by reading the light wrong, or the irreplaceable moments in time lost behind a lens cap. A photographer’s job is to be the conductor of a symphony of moving parts, influencing each element to make sure the end result is more than just the sum of the parts.

Without understanding each element of photography, it’s impossible to know how they relate as a whole. So let’s start our trip into the inner workings of photography with one of the most unfamiliar topics: aperture.

Defining Aperture
Aperture is simply what controls how much light is exposed to your film (or your digital camera’s sensor). It can be opened and closed using the F-Stop on your camera, which is usually a ring located around the lens in between the focus ring and the body of the camera. If you’ve ever looked into someone’s eye as light was shone into it, you have a pretty good idea of what the aperture does – it works just like a pupil.

Most cameras have an F-Stop range of 1.7 or 2.0 to 22 or so; the range of values usually increases with the quality and cost of the camera. You can see your camera’s range by looking at the numbers around your lens. Lower F Stops expose the film (or sensor) to more light and are more open, while high F Stops close the aperture and shut out the light.

How Aperture Impacts Images
Using your F-Stop to purposefully manipulate the aperture of your camera will allow you to change the depth of field shown in your photographs. If you’re unfamiliar with the term “depth of field” it describes how much of your picture is sharp and how much is blurry. Aperture directly affects the amount of time a frame is exposed. And, the more time the film has to absorb light, the more clarity and depth will come through the final image.

For example, if you were to take a picture of a line of dominos from one end using a low F Stop number (an open aperture) you would likely see one or two dominos clearly and the other dominos as blurry. Open apertures create a shallow depth of field. If you were to take the same photo with a high F Stop (a closed aperture), you would see a lot more dominos down the line.

Fun Aperture Experiments
Once you know how it works, playing with your camera’s aperture can be a lot of fun.  Here’s a couple of ideas to try the next time you’re out shooting and you want to test it out:

  • Take every photograph twice – once at a high F-Stop, and once at a low F-Stop.
  • Challenge yourself to shoot an entire roll at one F-Stop, then switch it up.
  • Put your camera on full manual and adjust the F-Stop on the fly to adjust for light

Don’t forget to adjust the shutter speed of your camera to allow for more or less light (faster speeds for more light, slower speeds for less), or you may end up with overexposed or underexposed images. Many digital cameras have a fantastic option called “aperture priority mode” which lets you choose an F Stop and will then adjust the shutter speed automatically. It is worth noting that the best conditions for experimenting with aperture are cloudy or overcast days. When faced with low or bright light, your options for F Stop values will become limited.

Of course, the very best way to improve your photography is to never stop shooting. So, get out there and find those photographs!

How to Make a Great Picture – Part 1

INCLUDE PEOPLE IN YOUR FRAME

We are all aware of good pictures. And recently, people have given in to a lot more photography and pictures than ever. In this changing time, I’m sure that every one of you has witnessed a lot of good pictures. And here, I will tell you what makes a shot memorable, impact-full and uncommon.

Let me give you a very common example. An endless stretch of the blue icy land is beautiful. An endless stretch of a blue icy land with a small child playing near his igloo is even more fascinating! A burst of life in a rugged topography, a ray of warmth in a cold icy land! Powerful emotion is what will make this shot memorable. Include real people with real people in your pictures than landscapes as a whole. This would let you reach out to a million effortlessly. A face gives you photograph an identity. Remember, emotion touches all. So, if you are a photographer, you would instantly know that the moment in that picture has a deeper meaning and could reach out to thousands in an instant because of its relativity to its audience.

Human feelings and emotions are priceless. A good landscape photographer is well aware of this. He will go that extra step to get such moments on his camera. The innocent expressions of a child while playing, the undying love in the eyes of two lovers, the eternal look of an aging couple, the tears streaming down a heartbroken which evokes empathy and the endless joys released out of a happy family spending time together – that is what life is about and that is what pictures should possess! Life has its share of happiness, loneliness, sadness, anger and fun. A true photographer keeps tabs on such vital sentiments and showcases it in his landscape pictures.

Landscape photographers should bring out the most they can from their pictures. It is a well known phenomenon that landscape photography is much preferred in all and the nature is undoubtedly beautiful by itself. But shying away from capturing individuals in your camera will only make you lose out on precious moments in life. So I would like to encourage all you passionate photographers out there to take include people as part of your agenda within landscape photography. Faces will give that extra edge to your photograph.

A spontaneous dreamer and a soulful Landscape Photographer of those dreams etched by nature, by passion and profession, I am Yaroslav Staniec, a dream catcher. Born in Poland and residing in England, it gives me much pleasure to master the art of capturing beauty if not time, through my lenses.

Here’s an invitation to all who appreciates nature for what it really is.
